DAVID JAMES GANDY was born in Billericay, Essex (England) on the 19th February 1980. In his youth, Gandy wanted to be a veterinarian but his grades were not high enough to meet the needed standards for that line of study and he finally, was studying Multimedia Computing at the University Of Gloucestershire. At the same time, a self-confessed petrol head, he began working for Auto Express, delivering the latest Porsches and Jaguars to the track for testing. Before graduating from the University, his housemate entered him (without his knowledge) into a modelling competition on Richard and Judy.'s "This Morning show" (ITV). After winning and got with it a contract with the prestigious Select Model Management Agency in London, he became a successful model and his life took a very different direction.
David Gandy began modelling in 2002. His first five years as a model were a succession of endless castings for catwalk shows, and rejections, before his career took off. Gandy admits that it wasn't easy to break into the modelling industry "because the trend was for skinny, androgynous guys". Gandy's muscular build caused some menswear fashion designers to move to a more masculine standard.
During the early years of his career, Gandy modelled for a variety of companies including: Shiatzy Chen, 7 for all Mankind, Zara, Gant U.S.A., Hugo Boss, Russell & Bromley, H&M, Carolina Herrera, Massimo Dutti and others. In 2006, he became the lead male model for Italian designers Dolce & Gabbana, annually starring in their apparel campaigns and fashion shows (i.e, opening for D&G in Milan in 2010) and working with female supermodels such as Gemma Ward, Scarlett Johansson and Naomi Campbell as well as male models including Noah Mills, Tony Ward and Adam Senn.
David has shot with some of the most sought after international photographers including Mario Testino and Steven Meisel and boasts an envious portfolio of editorial work including the cover of VMan, L’Optimum and GQ. Mario Testino said; “David has something of what the 1980’s supermodels have. He radiates health and positivity. I think he has what it takes to be very big. It’s exciting because it signifies a real shift in men’s fashion. The male model world is changing.”
The increase in his popularity and name recognition resulted in a broad portfolio of magazine covers, editorial photo shoots, interviews and industry awards. He has gone on to participate in fashion-related and personal projects such as writing a blog for British Vogue since 2010, writing car reviews for British GQ since 2011, writing about men's fitness, fashion and nutrition for Telegraph Men UK since autumn 2013, mobile app developer and charity work.
2011 was another tremendous year for David Gandy. In June, he launched "David Gandy: The book" by Dolce & Gabbana and he became the first ever male model to be honoured with his own coffee table book, dedicated to him by Dolce & Gabbana, celebrating their work over the past 6 years. The launch in Italy involved 43 securities, police escorts, four personal appearances by David and culminated in a party for him, thrown by the designers. Available globally, all profits from the book go to the EUPLOOS charity.
In 2012, he was featured on sixteen magazine covers, eighteen fashion editorials and modelled for Banana Republic, Lucky Brand Jeans, El Palacio de Hierro and Marks & Spencer. In addition, Johnnie Walker Blue Label whisky, known for its collaborations with the design and fashion industries, named David Gandy as its new brand ambassador.
In 2013, Dolce & Gabbana released the third version of the “Light Blue” fragrance campaign featuring Gandy. Once again, Mario Testino filmed the adverts and commercial on location in the island of Capri, southern Italy but this time with Italian model Bianca Balti in the female role.
In other hand Bionda Castana, a British shoe label, enlisted the help of David Gandy to create a very steamy fashion film for its autumn/winter 2013-14 campaign, called "David Gandy's Goodnight" which was listed #2 in the Weekly Top 10 Fashion Films List by Fashion Film Network. In it, he seduces several women who discover later that he has stolen their shoes.
In October, David Gandy takes a leap to be able to expand his brand internationally as the new face of the SM Men's Fashion Store
And in the last part of the year, he reprized his appearances in short films this time at the hands of Jaguar and its short online film featuring renowned British model called "Escapism" (Sept 26, 2013) which featured him driving models such as the C-Type, E-Type, XKSS as well as the new F-Type.
Within the Christmas campaigns, in November, Marks & Spencer launched their 2013 Christmas Tv advertising campaign, "Magic & Sparkle" featuring David Gandy alongside Rosie Huntington-Whiteley with Helena Bonham Carter. Thanks to recent tragic anorexia deaths and several high profile campaigns, seeing a scarily skinny model on the catwalk is becoming an increasingly rare event.
But while womenswear designers have taken a step in the right direction, it seems the same cannot be said for those behind men's fashion collections.
A photo of a shockingly thin male model on the catwalk at YSL was tweeted by blogger Poppy Dinsey, the founder of website What I Wore Today.
Woefully irresponsible model casting at YSL yesterday.' she wrote, before adding: 'Speechless'.
The photo of the emaciated model prompted a barrage of responses from other Twitter users, most of whom tweeted their support and horror YSL's use of the gaunt model.
But in a disturbing twist, others weighed in in favour of looking extremely thin, with one user - who outs herself as 'pro ana' in her Twitter handle - arguing that despite appearances, Dinsey should have made clear that he 'ISN'T ill'.
The woman added: 'Have you thought how he'd feel if he saw this? He has absolutely NOTHING wrong.'
'I have had hundreds of replies but haven't seen a single response that says they think it looks healthy or acceptable, although plenty of fashiony friends enjoyed the collection itself - which people seem to be forgetting about,' said Dinsey.
'What did upset me was the number of people who said the model was 'disgusting' - I made a point of saying you can't assume that the model has an eating disorder.
'I have been to hundreds of fashion shows so I'm never particularly surprised by the latest 'shock model picture' but casting directors have to take some responsibility.
'A model may well be healthy, but if someone looking at the pictures will assume the opposite, why not cast someone who doesn't create such controversy?'
